Dennis Hong & RoMeLa bring us robots from the future

We all love robots. If you’re here, chances are that you’re a geek, which gives you an even greater predisposition for robot-love. Robots cature our imagination because they can do what we can’t, obey to our bidding and extend the possibilities of the imaginable. Since the beginning of Science Fiction, men have fantasized about robots – both friends and foe of mankind—with incredible capacities.

It was Science fiction that inspired Dennis Hong to work in robotics. In his own words: “I still cannot forget the mind-blowing sensation when I first watched the movie Star Wars. I was fascinated by R2D2 and C-3PO. Since then, I decided to become a robot scientist and never changed my mind.”

Hong is the founder and director of RoMeLa – a Virginia Tech robotics lab that has pioneered the following breakthroughs in robot design and engineering, as well as other incredible machines.

In this video from the TEDxNASA conference, Dennis Hong introduces seven award-winning, all-terrain robots -  like the humanoid, soccer-playing DARwIn and the cliff-gripping CLIMBeR – all built by his team and teaches us the five creative secrets to his lab’s incredible technical success.

After watching this video, there is no way you didn’t change your ming about your career path. I know it’s too late for me, but now my ultimate goal is to become rich enough to buy one of these things. Each of them is more fascinating than the last. Which one is your favorite?
