Google Chrome Beta for Mac & Linux

Google Chrome Beta for Mac & Linux

“It took longer than we expected, but we hope the wait was worth it!”
Google has released the beta version of Google Chrome for Mac and Linux. We’ve already tested out the Alpha, and it looked good. Beta just shows that Google is gearing for a release soon and that the current Chrome is finally considered by Google as feature-complete. Here’s what Google has to say about the Mac version.
“We wanted Google Chrome to feel at home on the Mac, so we’ve focused on uniting our clean, simple design with subtle animations and effects to create a snappy and satisfying browsing experience on OS X.”
The Chrome for Mac teem is proud of the speed they have achieved. I don’t run Mac OS on my machine, but I’d be interested to hear about that. Is it as snappy as they say? Apperantly, “there’s hardly even time for the icon in the dock to bounce!”

Linux may not be as important as the Mac in terms of market-share, but Google has done a special effort.
“At Google, most engineers use Linux machines, so we certainly heard loud and clear how much they wanted Google Chrome for Linux.”
Google gives us some interesting info about both versions. Here are some facts they released:

  • 73,804 lines of Mac-specific code written
  • 60,000 lines of Linux-specific code written
  • 29 developer builds for Mac
  • 23 developer builds for Linux
  • 1,177 Mac-specific bugs fixed
  • 2,713 Linux-specific bugs fixed
  • 12 external committers and bug editors to the Google Chrome for both the Linux and Mac code bases, as well as 48 external code contributors

They’re keen on showing us the’ve been working, but these numbers don’t mean much. Obviously, they paired both announcements. We know extentions are not ready yet on Mac, and therefore ommited In the Linux case, a release now make a lot of sense. Chrome OS (which will be based on the Linux kernel) will be released in the not-too-distant future, so it is imperative that Chrome for Linux be ready for prime-time soon.
