GIMP, alongside other OSS graphic tools in the right hands is just as potent as CS4, As stated many times, the lacking feature is familiarity, I am one of the people who would much rather use openoffice to iWork, and itunes?,the issue there lies with its love of ipod only music downloads, what happens when i want to buy a product that steve jobs doesnt endorse. imho, apple is linux for people who cant make decisions for themselves, or cant manage the simple task of creating a dual boot.

There's a compatibility layer that runs Civ IV 'guaranteed'. It's shitty, but that's more or less true for Mac too. As to chat, I don't use Pidgin nor Adium so I have no idea. OpenOffice is shit (IMO, some people say they like it for some reason I just can't grasp), but KOffice OK. I still prefer MS office's ribbon interface to what iWork proposes. Bansee is lame (never tried Xine), but I sincerely prefer Amarok to iTunes by far. Each OS has it's own application, some better, some worst, but when comparing the quality of the OS, the only time when the applications come in is when you compare the libraries and graphic toolkits of the interfaces. The rest is just a question of market-share. Do you remember the app selection on Mac OS a few years back?

No, I can't run CS 5 on Linux, and the only Photoshop versions that run are a few years old, but frankly, the fraction of people who actually need Photoshop is tiny. I never said that Linux operating systems are a viable alternative for everyone, but that most people would be perfectly happy with one. Apart for those in niche markets, Linux is good enough for every home user.

Can you run Civ on Linux?
No pidgin will ever come close to Adium, no Open Office can compete with iWork, and no banshee or Xine can even be compared to iTunes.
Can you run CS4 (or the soon to be released CS5) on linux?

The only thing I envy is the app repository, but even this is being fixed with Bodega...
