Getting the geeks outside
Image: Some random geohash in Bangladesh. Read on and discover how to find a geohash near you.
What happens every saturday at 4:00 PM someplace near you? Geohash meeting! If you’re wondering what that is, the geohashing wiki has a simple explanation:
“Geohashing is a method for finding an effectively random location nearby and visiting it: a Spontaneous Adventure Generator. Every day, the algorithm generates a new set of coordinates for each 1°×1° latitude/longitude zone (known as a graticule) in the world. [...] Everyone in a given region gets the same set of coordinates relative to their graticule.
Geohashing was invented by Randall Munroe, that genius behind the Xkcd comics. The concept behind the geohash is simple:
Feel lost? You’re not the only one. Let’s look at the real-life implementation of this. Go to the the map.
1- Select a date (left hand corner of the page) and go to your location. It is preferable to chose 2- a Saturday, as saturday at 4PM is the official time (where you would have any chance of meeting some-one (if you are lucky enough to live in a region infested by geohashers).
3- When you’re there, double-click. You will automatically be sent to a “location near you”.
4- Go to that place.
There are a lot of interesting activities linked to geohashing. Doubt it? Join #geohashing chat on foonetic with your own IRC client or using your web browser, or click here for more information.
